S.A. Lelchuk is the crime writer behind the Nikki Griffin novels, a fast-moving series about a bookseller who also works as a private investigator. Lelchuk grew up in New Hampshire. He studied English at Amherst College, then earned a master's degree from Dartmouth College, where he focused on creative writing. That mix of close reading, writing practice, and a lasting interest in crime fiction helped shape the kind of books he would later publish.

Writing has stayed closely connected to teaching in his life.

He has taught graduate creative writing at Dartmouth, including courses in short fiction and crime fiction. He has also worked as a PEN America Prison Writing Mentor, helping incarcerated writers develop their work. It is a practical side of a writing life that fits with his interest in stories about pressure, power, and the ways people try to take back control.

His debut novel, Save Me from Dangerous Men, arrived in 2019. It introduced Nikki Griffin, who runs a small California bookstore while taking private investigation jobs. Nikki also quietly helps women escape abusive men, a mission tied to her own history and her refusal to look away when someone is being hurt.

In Save Me from Dangerous Men, a surveillance job involving a tech employee and possible stolen company secrets becomes much more dangerous than Nikki expects. The book mixes a mystery plot with corporate deception, domestic abuse, and a heroine who knows how to fight but still has plenty to lose. It was included on several best-of-the-year lists and shortlisted for a Barry Award for best first mystery or crime novel.

Lelchuk returned to Nikki in One Got Away, published in April 2021. This time, a wealthy San Francisco family hires her to track down a con man who has defrauded its matriarch. As Nikki follows the money, she finds that nearly everyone involved is hiding something, and another woman's safety becomes part of the case.

Across the two books, Lelchuk keeps the focus on a protagonist who is both tough and empathetic. The California setting matters, from independent bookstores and city wealth to the tech world and its secrets. Readers who like private-eye mysteries with sharp action, tangled cases, and a main character with a strong moral line will find a natural place to start with Nikki.
