Series background & context
S-Squad is William Meikle's monster-fighting military horror series, and it knows exactly what it wants to be. A team of hard-used Scottish special forces soldiers gets sent around the world to deal with things that should not exist, or at least should not still be alive, breeding, mutating, or eating people. The result is fast, loud, funny in places, and usually covered in mud, blood, ice, or all three.
The big beasties are the point.
Early on the series centers on Captain John Banks and the battered survivors of one mission rolling into the next. Later books lean more heavily on Sergeant Wiggins, Wiggo, whose mix of competence, bad luck, and refusal to quit helps hold the whole mad enterprise together. The squad's chemistry is a huge part of the appeal. They swear, panic, argue, improvise, and keep moving because standing still is usually how you get eaten.
Each book throws the team into a new location and a new cryptid or creature-feature nightmare. Infestation starts with a brutal Arctic mission. From there the squad runs into undead war secrets in Operation Antarctica, revived Ice Age animals in Operation: Siberia, giant snakes in Operation: Amazon, a lethal Loch Ness problem, desert deathworms, offshore terrors, underground predators, and all sorts of things with too many teeth. The settings matter as much as the monsters. Ice, jungle, desert, fjord, fen, city tunnels, they all change how the fight works.
What keeps the series from feeling repetitive is that Meikle genuinely enjoys both halves of the formula. He likes the monster side, clearly, but he also likes the mission structure, the military banter, the logistics, and the way each environment creates a different kind of pressure. These are not sprawling epics. They are lean action-horror books built to get in, hit hard, and get out.
Read them in order if you can, because the team takes losses, promotions happen, and the camaraderie builds over time. Still, every entry has its own local menace, so it is easy enough to test the waters with one and see if the mix works for you.
If you want creature features with guns, grit, Scottish voices, and almost no patience for standing around while the monster gets organized, S-Squad delivers exactly that.
