Ryan Cusack Books in Order

Lisa McInerney's Ryan Cusack books are set in Cork and move through the city's underworld, rented rooms, bars, music venues, and family kitchens. They are crime-tinged novels, but they are not detective stories. The real pull comes from the people, especially the way class, money, sex, religion, family history, and bad timing keep colliding.

Ryan starts out in The Glorious Heresies as a fifteen-year-old drug dealer, bright enough to see the trap around him and still young enough to think he might dodge it. He does not want to turn into his father, Tony. He wants love, self-respect, and some kind of future, but every choice seems tied to someone else's mess.

The first book is built around a much wider cast than Ryan alone. Maureen Phelan, an older woman looking for some kind of redemption, Georgie, a sex worker trying to change course, and Jimmy, a gangster with deep family ties all help define the world he is growing up in. That matters, because this series works as a network of damaged, funny, furious lives rather than a single straight line from A to B.

In The Blood Miracles, Ryan is older, but not safer. The book tightens around him as smuggling, loyalty, romance, and questions of identity pull him in different directions. Music begins to matter more, too, which becomes even clearer in The Rules of Revelation. That third novel opens the frame again, bringing Georgie, Karine, Mel, Maureen, and others back into the foreground as old secrets, new art, and the country's changing social rules start to press on everybody at once. By then the series is not just about one young man trying to stay afloat. It is about what happens when a whole city keeps score.

The tone is darkly funny, fast, angry, and unexpectedly tender. McInerney writes people who talk big, lie badly, love hard, and carry their past around like a weight in the pocket. If you like character-led crime fiction, but want more emotional sprawl and a stronger sense of place, this is where the Ryan Cusack books land. Start with The Glorious Heresies and read in order. The later books hit harder when you already know the history.
