Author bio
Ruth Jones is a Welsh actor, comedian, screenwriter and novelist whose stories move easily between television and the page. Born in 1966 in Bridgend and raised beside the sea in Porthcawl, she grew up with a strong sense of community and place.
At school she threw herself into plays and musical theatre, often sharing the stage with fellow pupil Rob Brydon. Those productions nurtured a love of performance, but also of the way ordinary lives and small jokes can light up a crowd.
After studying theatre at the University of Warwick, Jones trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff. Like many young actors she mixed auditions with temporary clerical work and touring shows, determined to build a career even when the next job wasn’t guaranteed.
Television gradually opened its doors. She played Kelly in the drama Fat Friends, where she met James Corden, and appeared in series such as Little Britain, Nighty Night, Saxondale, East Is East and Little Dorrit. That mix of comedy and drama helped sharpen her feel for character and timing.
Her breakthrough came with Gavin & Stacey, the warm‑hearted sitcom she co‑wrote with Corden and starred in as Nessa Jenkins. What began as a small show about a Welsh woman and an English man falling in love grew into a much‑loved hit, earning awards and cementing her place in British comedy. She later created and led the Sky series Stella, another portrait of everyday Welsh life that balanced jokes with genuine feeling.
In recognition of that work across stage and screen, Jones has picked up a string of industry honours, including an MBE for services to entertainment. Awards matter less to her, though, than the chance to keep telling stories that feel honest to the people and places she knows.
Fiction came later. An old screenplay about a messy affair kept tugging at her, and eventually she rewrote it as her debut novel Never Greener, published in 2018. The book, about second chances and the damage they can do, struck a chord with readers and spent weeks in the bestseller charts.
She followed it with Us Three, charting the shifting friendship of three Welsh women over decades, and Love Untold, a multi‑generational story about mothers, daughters and the cost of leaving things unsaid. Her 2025 novel By Your Side widens that canvas again, sending a council worker to a remote Scottish island on a case that slowly rewrites her own life. Across them all, Jones returns to themes of loyalty, secrets, forgiveness and the quiet courage it takes to change.
Her experience as an actor and screenwriter shows on the page. Conversations crackle, side characters feel lived‑in, and chapters often end on the kind of emotional beat you’d expect before an ad break: not a twist for its own sake, but a moment that makes you lean in.
Jones still draws deeply on Wales for inspiration and spends as much time there as she can, close to the coastline and communities that shaped her. Between novels, scripts and the occasional return to the stage, she keeps circling the same territory: everyday people, complicated hearts, and the hope that, even after mistakes, connection is still possible.
