Author bio
Russell Blake writes thrillers that move fast and hit hard. He is an American novelist who has lived in Mexico for many years, and that setting shows up again and again in his work, especially in the heat, danger, border tension, and cartel violence of books like King of Swords and Night of the Assassin.
Before fiction took over, Blake had already lived several careers. In interviews and biographical notes, he has described himself as a serial entrepreneur, a former real estate developer, and the owner of a medical company he sold before settling in Mexico. Writing came later, after retirement left him restless and looking for the next thing to build.
That next thing turned out to be books.
He began self-publishing in 2011, after deciding the traditional route was a poor fit for how quickly he wanted to work. Blake has said he can write thousands of words in a day, and for a stretch he released book after book at a pace that made him part of the early self-publishing boom. That run helped turn him into a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author and brought wider attention to his work.
Self-publishing suited him. He liked controlling covers, release timing, and the business side of the job, and he was unusually open about treating writing like work instead of waiting around for permission. That practical streak also fed into his nonfiction, especially How to Sell a Gazillion eBooks in No Time.
Readers usually find him through one of a few doorways. Some start with Jet, his long-running series about a former Mossad assassin trying to outrun her past. Others head to King of Swords and the Assassin books for their brutal Mexico-set duel between El Rey and Captain Romero Cruz. And some prefer the darkly funny noir of Black, where unlucky Hollywood private investigator Artemus Black keeps stumbling into murder, vanity, and chaos.
He doesn't stay in one lane for long.
Blake has also written post-apocalyptic survival fiction in Blood Honor and the Day After Never books, treasure-hunt adventures like Ramsey's Gold and Emerald Buddha, and conspiracy-heavy thrillers such as Fatal Exchange and The Voynich Cypher. In 2014, Clive Cussler chose him to co-write two Fargo novels, The Eye of Heaven and The Solomon Curse, which brought Blake's breakneck pacing into a bigger, globe-trotting adventure format. Across the catalog, the same interests keep returning: capable people under pressure, dirty systems, secret histories, and plans going bad in a hurry.
He has also written nonfiction beyond publishing advice. Retirement Secrets of Mexico reflects how closely he knows the country he calls home, and An Angel With Fur, about a rescued dog named Lobo, shows a softer corner of his work and the affection for dogs that turns up in his author bios too. Even when the subject changes, Blake tends to write in a direct, no-nonsense way that keeps things moving.
These days he still seems closely tied to Mexico. His bios place him on the Pacific coast and usually mention dogs, fishing, boating, tequila, and writing, which feels about right for someone who built a second career by refusing to slow down. For readers, that is the main appeal of Russell Blake: a lot of range, a lot of motion, and very little wasted time.
