Series background & context

The Running page currently centers on a single book, Running with the Devil, but it still shows an interesting side of Lorelei James.

Instead of a family-centered western romance, this story leans into romantic suspense. The setup brings together a DEA agent, a murder investigation, and the high-pressure chaos of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota. That immediately gives the book a different rhythm from the ranch and rodeo novels. It moves faster, feels more suspicious, and keeps both attraction and danger in play at the same time.

What stands out is the atmosphere. James uses South Dakota in a different way here, less open-range community and more noise, crowds, undercover tension, and uncertainty about who can be trusted. The heroine is not entering a safe small-town orbit. She is already tangled in something risky, and the hero is walking into that mess on purpose.

So if you like James when she edges toward mystery and danger, this book is worth a look. It is a compact, high-heat detour that shows how comfortably she can blend romance with pursuit, secrets, and real physical stakes.
