Series background & context

At its core, the Ruined series is a revenge story that keeps getting more complicated. It starts with an enemy kingdom, a fake engagement, and a girl who means to burn the whole thing down. But the books are just as interested in loyalty, grief, and the hard question of what peace is worth after a war has already taken everything.

The main character is Emelina Flores, usually called Em. She comes from Ruina, a kingdom whose people are known as the Ruined, but unlike many of them, Em has no magic. That matters. She is not walking into danger because she has secret power to save her. She survives with planning, nerve, and a sword, which gives the series a grounded edge even inside a fantasy setup.

When Ruined opens, Em's parents have been murdered, her sister Olivia has been taken, and the enemy kingdom of Lera is at the center of it all. Em slips into Lera by posing as the crown prince's betrothed, with a simple goal: get close enough to destroy the royal family from the inside. Prince Casimir is supposed to be part of the target. Instead, he becomes one of the reasons the story gets morally messy.

That tension, between vengeance and understanding, drives the whole trilogy. The setting matters because these books are not confined to one castle or one romance. The war between Ruina and Lera shapes every alliance, every betrayal, and every personal choice, and the magic in the series is tied to bloodlines, power, and fear. Court life, border politics, and battlefield decisions all press in on Em at once, so even quieter scenes tend to carry a sense of danger.

The sisters are the heart of it.

By the time the story moves into Avenged and Allied, Em is no longer only trying to survive an enemy court. She is trying to decide what kind of future Ruina should have, and Olivia does not always want the same answer. One sister begins to believe peace might be possible. The other is pulled harder toward revenge. That split turns the series from a story about defeating an outside enemy into a story about what war does to the people who have every reason to hate.

If you like YA fantasy with fast pacing, political maneuvering, sharp banter, and romance that never fully escapes the shadow of the larger conflict, this is where the series lands. Ruined, Avenged, and Allied all stay close to questions of family, homeland, and trust. The action is big, but the strongest thread is personal: Em trying to hold on to herself while the people she loves, and the country she loves, keep asking her to become someone harder.
