The Saddlemaker's Wife

by Earlene Fowler

2006

After her husband Cole dies, Ruby McGavin learns the family he claimed was dead is very much alive and that she now owns part of their California cattle ranch. In Cardinal she confronts buried secrets, wary in-laws, and a growing bond with saddlemaker Lucas McGavin.

Series background & context

The Ruby McGavin books follow a young woman whose life is upended by a secret-filled inheritance. Ruby McGavin believes she has married a man with no family left, so the shock is enormous when, after her husband Cole’s sudden death, she learns he owned a share of a working cattle ranch in California and that his relatives are alive and waiting.

In The Saddlemaker's Wife, Ruby travels to the high-desert town of Cardinal with Cole’s ashes and a plan to sell her share of the Circle MG ranch and move on. Instead she finds herself drawn into the rough beauty of the land, the rhythms of ranch work, and a tight-knit community that remembers a very different version of the man she married.

At the ranch she meets Cole’s wary mother and aunt, the employees who kept the place running, and Lucas McGavin, Cole’s younger brother, who has given up a San Francisco law career to make custom saddles. As Ruby sifts through conflicting stories about the past, she uncovers long-standing feuds, buried grief, and a central family secret that explains why Cole cut himself off from everyone who loved him.

The first book reads like a blend of mystery and family saga. There is a question at its heart, but instead of a traditional whodunit, the tension comes from whether Ruby will learn the truth in time to claim a place in this complicated clan and decide what she wants from Lucas and the ranch.

The sequel, The Road to Cardinal Valley, brings Ruby back to Cardinal a year later with her troubled brother Nash, hoping that fresh air, steady work, and the McGavins’ support will help him fight his addiction. When Nash relapses and a serious accident forces Ruby to seek out their estranged mother, Etta Walker, the story widens to take in another broken family trying to heal. Etta’s hidden past and her reasons for leaving her children echo the McGavins’ own history of denial and silence.

Across both books, Fowler leans into themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the question of how much of your identity comes from blood versus chosen family. The landscape around Cardinal, with its dusty roads, winter storms, and wide night skies, feels as important as any character. Horses, handmade saddles, rodeos, and small-town diners give the books a grounded, sensory texture.

Readers coming from the Benni Harper mysteries will recognize the emphasis on relationships and slow-burn romance, but the Ruby McGavin stories stand on their own as heartfelt tales about people who have been hurt, sometimes badly, trying to decide whether to trust each other again.
