Unprincely

by Eden Finley

2018

Bisexual prince Xander, his long time bodyguard Roman and polished lady Cordelia share an anonymous night at an exclusive club. When masks come off and real identities collide with royal duty, the three of them must work out if a secret triad is worth a crown.

Series background & context

Royal Obligation is a small, self contained corner of Eden Finleys universe that delivers a contemporary fairy tale with a distinctly queer twist. The series currently consists of a single novel, Unprincely, which follows a bisexual prince, his long suffering bodyguard and the noblewoman who refuses to play by palace rules.

Prince Alexander has spent years as the palaces favourite scandal, more interested in partying than protocol and very aware that rumours about his taste in partners make the courtiers nervous. Delia grew up in the same privileged circles but has her own reasons for rebelling against expectations, even as she smiles politely through charity events and family obligations. Roman, a former soldier turned royal guard, is the steady presence tasked with keeping Xander out of trouble.

A masked night at an exclusive club throws all three of them together in a way none of them expects. What was supposed to be anonymous fun leaves them obsessed with finding their mysterious third, only to discover that the stranger in question is far closer to the crown than is strictly appropriate.

From there, Unprincely focuses less on politics and more on the emotional workload of building a three person relationship in a world that barely understands two men together, let alone an openly poly royal triad. Duty, public image and the constant need for discretion push against the pull of genuine connection and mutual desire.

The tone is playful and indulgent, with plenty of heat, but there are quieter beats about compromise, communication and what each person is willing to give up in order to keep the others. Readers who enjoy royal settings, bodyguard tension and MMF dynamics will find everything they need here, wrapped up in a single satisfying story.
