By this point, the recurring cast, bodyguards, palace staff, relatives, and old enemies, gives the books a strong family saga feel.

What Herkness seems to enjoy most here is the clash between rank and real feeling. Her royal heroes are powerful, but they are also lonely, overburdened, and often boxed in by tradition. The heroines are outsiders, usually American, practical, and unimpressed enough to see the man before the title. That makes the chemistry work.
