Roseanne A Brown Books in Order

Roseanne A. Brown was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and moved to central Maryland as a child. She has said that, from early on, she wanted to use writing to connect the different cultures she called home. That idea, home as more than one place at once, still runs through a lot of her work.

Writing came first.

Before her novels found readers, Brown studied journalism at the University of Maryland and took part in the Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House program, later returning as a teaching assistant. She also did journalistic work, including pieces featured by Voice of America. That mix of creative writing, reporting, and close reading shows up in her books, which tend to move quickly but still pay attention to power, place, and the ways people talk around the truth.

Her debut novel, A Song of Wraiths and Ruin, arrived in 2020 and quickly put her on a lot of readers' radar. The book mixes grief, court politics, dangerous magic, and a romance built on two people who are each hiding deadly plans. Readers who love big fantasy stakes often connect with how grounded the emotions feel, especially when Brown writes about mourning, duty, and the terrible things people talk themselves into when they are desperate.

She likes stories with teeth.

Brown returned to that world in A Psalm of Storms and Silence, which broadens the scale without losing the pressure between its central characters. Across the duology, she keeps coming back to a few favorite questions: What does power cost? What happens when love and survival pull in opposite directions? And how do young people build an identity inside systems that already have a role picked out for them?

She took those interests in a new direction with Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting and its sequels, Serwa Boateng's Guide to Witchcraft and Mayhem and Serwa Boateng's Guide to Saving the World. These books shift to middle grade, but they still carry Brown's mix of folklore, humor, and emotional messiness. Serwa is a kid monster hunter trying to survive both magical danger and regular school, and readers tend to like the way Brown balances big action with sharp comedy, family tension, and the very real panic of being twelve.

Brown has also written for big shared worlds without losing her own interests. In Shuri and T'Challa: Into the Heartlands and Ghost-Spider: Broken Chords, she brings sibling tension, identity questions, and fast-moving adventure into Marvel settings. In The Sinister Sisters and Other Terrifying Tales, she leans into spooky storytelling and Ghanaian folklore in graphic novel form. Even when she is playing with familiar superheroes or horror franchises, she keeps circling back to character first.

Her range has kept growing. Brown has worked with Marvel, Star Wars, and Disney, and in 2025 she received the William G. Wilson Maryland Author Award. Her upcoming adult fantasy, By Divine Rage, looks like the next step, taking her interest in myth, power, and impossible choices into older territory.

She now lives with her partner outside Washington, D.C. In her off time, she has said she can usually be found arguing with their dog, disappearing under piles of books, or thinking about musicals. That feels about right for a writer whose stories are lively, slightly sharp around the edges, and never very far from obsession.
