Baby Wars

by Kat T Masen

2019

Newly married Zoey and Drew thought surviving their "roomie wars" prepared them for anything, but twins, sleepless nights, and demanding careers prove otherwise. This novella follows them through chaotic early parenthood as love, resentment, and exhaustion collide in very real, very funny ways.

Series background & context

Roomie Wars is Masen’s fun, flirty roommates-to-lovers series, following Zoey Richards and Andrew "Drew" as they stumble from platonic roommates into partners, then parents. It trades billionaire boardrooms for shared apartments, beach days, and the kind of tiny everyday disasters that feel huge when your heart is on the line.

At the start of the story, Zoey is approaching thirty and tired of unreliable female roommates. After a long string of bad interviews, she settles on Drew, a slightly awkward pre-med student who seems like the safest possible choice. Years later everything has flipped. Drew is now a confident doctor with no shortage of admirers, while Zoey is healing from a brutal breakup that has knocked her off course.

Their comfortable friendship takes a sharp turn when Zoey needs a date to show off in front of her ex. She asks Drew to pretend to be her boyfriend for one night, and the plan quickly spirals. Fake kisses feel too real, jealousy creeps in, and the "roomie code" they once hid behind becomes harder and harder to keep.

Wedding Wars continues their story as Drew decides he is done pretending and wants a future with Zoey for real. Planning a wedding with two strong personalities, lingering doubts, and very opinionated friends creates as much chaos as romance. The book leans into miscommunication, grand gestures, and the fear of turning a perfect friendship into something you might not be able to fix.

Baby Wars, a later novella, revisits Zoey and Drew once the rings are on and the babies have arrived. Twins, sleepless nights, shifting careers, and changing bodies test even their deep bond. Instead of a glossy version of parenthood, the story leans into the real, sometimes unglamorous work of staying connected when you are both exhausted and pulled in a hundred directions.

Taken together, the Roomie Wars books chart one relationship across several big life stages: roommates in denial, partners planning a future, and new parents just trying to keep their eyes open. They keep Masen’s trademark banter and heat but ground everything in relatable milestones like paying rent, job stress, and the wild adjustment that comes with bringing home a baby or two.
