Author bio
Rona Halsall was born in Nottingham, grew up near Blackpool, and went to university in Leeds. Later she moved to Snowdonia, North Wales, where she raised her family while working as a business mentor. Before novels took over, her days were spent with practical writing, business plans, strategies, grant applications, and advice for small businesses and voluntary groups.
She came to fiction later than many writers.
Halsall has said the wish to write had been there for years, but it grew louder once her children were older and daily life loosened a little. Around the age of fifty she started treating that wish seriously. She read like an apprentice, joined online critique groups, and took an Open University fiction course that helped shape the opening of Love You Gone.
The first manuscript she finished was not the one that launched her career.
But it taught her that she could get to the end of a book, and that mattered. She wrote another, kept editing, found an agent, and eventually signed with a publisher. Her first thriller, Keep You Safe, arrived in 2018 and kicked off a run of tightly wound domestic suspense novels built on secrets, pressure, and the awful moment when trust starts to slip.
That mix runs through much of her work. In Love You Gone, a woman arrives at a Lake District holiday cottage to find her husband and children missing. In The Honeymoon, a romantic escape turns into something far more dangerous. Halsall likes ordinary set-ups, marriage, parenting, holidays, money worries, moving house, and then pushes them until the cracks show.
Family history, hidden motives, and unreliable relationships come up again and again. So do women trying to hold everyday life together while the ground shifts under them. Readers who click with her books usually mention the fast pace, the short chapters, and the feeling that absolutely everyone in the room may be hiding something.
Place matters too. Cornwall, Brighton, the Lake District, North Wales, and the Isle of Man all feed into the mood of her stories. These are not glossy postcard settings. They bring isolation, weather, close-knit communities, and the sense that help can feel just a little too far away when things start going wrong.
Off the page, Halsall sounds happiest outside. She has worked in an animal rescue centre, spent years rock-climbing, and often talks about plotting while walking mountains, forests, beaches, and coastal paths. Animals keep sneaking into the picture as well, from rescue guinea pigs to the dogs that have become part of her writing life.
Her books have hit top 100 charts in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and Germany, and The Bigamist was shortlisted for an International Thriller Writers award in 2024. More recent novels such as The Gossip show that she is still drawn to the same pressure points, family life, secrets, and the danger hiding inside familiar places. It suits her. She writes thrillers that begin close to home and then quietly pull the floor away.
