Author bio
Roland J. Green was an American writer and editor who spent decades working in science fiction, fantasy, and action adventure. He was born on September 2, 1944, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, but his family moved to Michigan when he was young. He grew up in Ypsilanti and finished high school there in 1962.
He studied political science at Oberlin College, graduating in 1966, then moved to Chicago for graduate work in international politics at the University of Chicago. Chicago also connected him with science-fiction fandom and the Society for Creative Anachronism, two interests that would keep showing up in his fiction. He enjoyed the practical side of imagined worlds: the rules of a kingdom, the supply problems behind a campaign, and the people who have to make a hard decision when no good options remain.
His first novel sale was Wandor's Ride, published in 1973.
That book began the Wandor sequence, a sword-and-sorcery adventure about Bertan Wandor and a troubled world waiting for the return of a five-crowned king. Green followed it with Wandor's Journey, Wandor's Voyage, and Wandor's Flight. The series has prophecy, dangerous travel, strange lands, and plenty of old-school paperback fantasy momentum.
Green also had a long run in military science fiction. The Peace Company novels follow a far-future peacekeeping force whose work usually means heading directly into a war zone. In the Starcruiser Shenandoah books, the focus shifts to a starship crew navigating flashpoints between rival powers. Readers who like command problems, military logistics, and action that has political consequences will find a lot to enjoy in both series.
He was comfortable sharing a world with other writers, too. With Jerry Pournelle, he co-wrote Janissaries: Clan and Crown and Janissaries III: Storms of Victory, continuing the story of Captain Rick Galloway and his stranded soldiers on the planet Tran. With his wife, Frieda A. Murray, he wrote The Book of Kantela, a fantasy of succession, frontier war, and court politics.
Green wrote under several names, including Roland Green, John Cleve, and the house name Jeffrey Lord. His work under those names ranges from science-fiction adventure to historical fiction and shared-world action series. He also wrote novels set in the Conan and Dragonlance worlds, edited anthologies, reviewed books, and contributed short fiction.
He kept working as a writer and reviewer for most of his adult life.
Green married Frieda A. Murray in 1975, and they had a daughter, Violette. He died in Chicago on April 20, 2021. His bibliography is wide, fast-moving, and very much rooted in the paperback era, full of soldiers, sailors, spies, rulers, mercenaries, and travelers pushed into unfamiliar worlds.
