Author bio
Rodney Riesel writes mysteries that smell like sunscreen and salt air, even when the writer himself is based far from the coast. A long-time resident of Herkimer, New York, he’s built a bibliography that keeps circling back to beach towns, marinas, and the people who can’t stop poking at trouble.
Before his writing career, he was an established contractor. He spent years running jobs, solving practical problems, and keeping a family schedule moving. Somewhere in that everyday grind, he started sketching stories, the kind of page-turners he liked to read.
His Tales of Dan Coast books begin in the Florida Keys, following Dan Coast, a lottery winner turned private detective. Dan is a wisecracking drinker, still carrying the weight of his wife’s death, and he has a habit of taking cases that look small until they aren’t. Early titles like Sleeping Dogs Lie, Ocean Floors, and Coasts of Christmas Past show how Riesel mixes humor with real stakes, then tightens the screws when the clues point somewhere darker.
Dan’s best friend and sidekick, Red Baxter, makes sure the trouble is rarely a solo act.
When Riesel wants a more straightforward badge-and-interview rhythm, he switches lanes to Detective Jake Stellar in the North Myrtle Beach novels. North Murder Beach drops Jake into a coastal town that runs on tourists and rumors, and the series keeps building, pairing him with fellow detective Avis Lint, who’s equal parts partner and friction. It’s still beach country, but with more procedure and fewer barstools.
Another corner of his map is Fort Pierce, Florida, where retired police detective Cole Ballinger runs the Breakwater Bar and Grill in the Sunrise City books. In Sunrise City and From Bad to Worse, Cole keeps getting asked for favors, murder investigations, missing kids, and he learns, again and again, that retirement doesn’t stop people from needing help. The cases are tough, but the voice stays plainspoken and quick.
Riesel clearly enjoys the way a small community can feel friendly and claustrophobic at the same time.
That small-town pressure is front and center in the Dunquin Cove novels, set in a quiet Maine seaside town where a stranger’s arrival flips everyone’s routine. And if you prefer your mysteries lighter on violence and heavier on local color, the Fernandina Beach books follow retirees Rex and Gayle Langley as they try to enjoy Florida life, only to keep running into crimes that won’t solve themselves.
In later work, Riesel even turns the camera back on the act of storytelling with Allen Crane, a mystery writer whose attempt to break writer’s block leads him into real investigations, often with his dog Frankie at his side. He also writes Reed Templeton stories that lean more into hard-edged detective trouble and department politics. Wherever the series lands, the through line stays the same: coastal settings, readable chapters, and characters who’d like a quiet life, but keep getting handed a case instead.
