Author bio

Robert Swartwood was born in 1981 and lives in Pennsylvania with his wife. He writes fast, dark thrillers and horror-leaning suspense, and over the years he has published under both his own name and the pen name Avery Bishop. He is a USA Today bestselling novelist, and his 2023 thriller The Killing Room went on to win the Thriller Award.

Before the bigger, bloodier books, he made his name by getting very small.

In 2009, Swartwood coined the term hint fiction for stories of 25 words or fewer, inspired by Hemingway's famous six-word example. He later edited Hint Fiction: An Anthology of Stories in 25 Words or Fewer, a book that helped introduce that idea to a much wider audience. His shorter work has also appeared in magazines and journals including The Los Angeles Review, Wigleaf, PANK, Chizine, Space and Time, and elimae.

That interest in compression never really left his novels. He tends to start with a hard jolt, a dead body, a vanished child, a man waking up in the wrong room, and then keep tightening. His first novel, The Calling, arrived in 2011. Around the same stretch came No Shelter, The Serial Killer's Wife, and Man of Wax, which showed right away that he was comfortable moving between supernatural horror, action thriller, domestic nightmare, and conspiracy fiction.

He likes stories where ordinary life gets ripped open fast.

A lot of readers first latch on to Holly Lin, the nanny by day and assassin by night at the center of No Shelter, The Devil You Know, and Hollow Point. Others go for the strange, relentless puzzle of the Man of Wax books, or the stripped-down panic of The Killing Room. Across those novels, Swartwood keeps coming back to hidden systems, false identities, family pressure, and people who realize too late that the rules around them were never what they seemed.

Under the Avery Bishop name, he shifts toward psychological suspense. Girl Gone Mad digs into guilt, bullying, and the way the past keeps pushing back. One Year Gone turns a missing-child story into something raw and personal. Even when the setup changes, the pull is similar: tight pacing, plainspoken prose, and characters forced to keep moving because standing still is not an option.

He has also written collections and shorter pieces, including Real Illusions and Phantom Energy, and contributed a novella to the Wayward Pines shared world with Nomad. That mix of novels, novellas, and very short fiction says a lot about the way he works. He is comfortable at any length, as long as the story gets in quick and leaves a mark.

These days he continues to publish thrillers under both names. Whether he is writing about killers, secret programs, celebrity obsession, or the undead, the through line is easy to spot: clean setups, mounting pressure, and characters who have to think fast if they want to survive.
