The Russian

by Ben Coes

2020

When the Russian mafia begins openly killing American power players, covert operative Rob Tacoma joins a secret team built to hit back. Then his partner is murdered, and the mission becomes brutally personal.

Series background & context

The Rob Tacoma books grow out of the same world as Dewey Andreas, but they hit a slightly different nerve. Fans who noticed Tacoma in the Dewey novels will recognize why he earned a spin-off. When he steps into the lead with The Russian, the focus shifts from global terror plots to the kind of criminal empire that can buy protection, corrupt systems, and hide in plain sight. It still feels like a Ben Coes thriller, but it comes at the danger from a lower, dirtier angle.

Tacoma is a covert operator with a Navy SEAL and CIA background, which means he understands both direct action and intelligence tradecraft. He is comfortable working close to the government, but he also feels like someone who can keep functioning when official rules stop being useful. That matters, because his enemies are not the sort you can politely indict and wait on. They are rich, insulated, and violent enough to make public murder look like a business memo.

This is a harsher corner of Coes's universe.

In The Russian, the Russian mafia grows bold enough to openly kill powerful Americans, a sign that organized crime has stopped hiding and started testing the state. The response is an off-the-books team built to hit back where normal law enforcement cannot reach. Then the mission turns personal almost immediately, leaving Tacoma to hunt men who have layers of muscle, money, and political protection between themselves and consequences.

That setup gives the series its tone. These are still fast military thrillers, with surveillance, manhunts, international travel, close-quarter fights, and a lot of tactical pressure, but they sit closer to crime fiction than the Dewey Andreas books do. The threat is not just a foreign government or a terror cell. It is a network that has already worked its way into American business, politics, and everyday life.

Tacoma also changes the rhythm. Dewey can feel like a battering ram aimed at a geopolitical crisis. Rob Tacoma feels more like a hunter moving through shadows, figuring out who is protected, who is exposed, and where to strike next. He can bring brute force when he needs to, but his stories leave more room for pursuit, infiltration, and revenge.

If Dewey Andreas gives Ben Coes a wide international canvas, Rob Tacoma gives him a sharper knife. Expect a leaner series, more underworld pressure, and a hero who usually has fewer resources than his enemies but just enough skill and nerve to keep going. If you like thrillers where organized crime and covert action collide, The Russian is a strong place to start.
