Roads of Heaven Books in Order

Roads of Heaven is one of the clearest introductions to what Melissa Scott does well. It is space opera, but the method of space travel is not sleek engineering in the usual mode. These ships move through a cosmos understood by alchemy, astrology, and long tradition. The result is science fiction that feels half historical, half mythic, without ever losing its interest in work, politics, and money.

Silence Leigh is the center of it.

She is a pilot, and in these books that means more than steering a ship. Pilots are specialists navigating a dangerous, partly ritualized system of travel, and Silence's gifts matter at a moment when the expanding Hegemony is changing who gets power and who gets pushed aside. Women, in particular, are losing ground, and Scott never lets that stay a background note. The pressure of that political shift drives the whole trilogy.

Five-Twelfths of Heaven sets up Silence, her crew, and the strange road to lost Earth. Silence in Solitude deepens the mystery by making her one of the few people who may actually be able to reach humanity's old home. The Empress of Earth brings siege, rivalry, and open conflict to the surface as every faction closes in on the same prize.

The books are adventurous, but they are not careless.

Scott pays attention to how trade routes, institutions, and prejudice shape daily life. That is why the invented cosmology works so well. The alchemical star-roads are memorable on their own, but they also affect jobs, status, marriage, law, and empire. They feel built into the culture, not pasted on top.

If you want a starting point for Scott's older work, this is an easy recommendation. The trilogy has the big pleasures of classic SF, lost worlds, dangerous journeys, contested power, but it already shows her interest in queer lives, layered systems, and crews that have to improvise their way through bad odds. It is one of her most distinctive shelves, and still one of the best places to begin.
