Rise of the Dragons
by Angie Sage
2019
Once dragons and humans shared Earth, until rogue riders called Raptors tried to take over and dragons were banished to another realm. Centuries later, lonely London girl Sirin, dragon rider Joss and silver dragon Lysander are drawn together as dragons return and a new battle begins.
Series background & context
Rise of the Dragons imagines a near modern world that once shared its skies with dragons. Long ago, a brutal faction of riders called Raptors tried to seize control, and in the aftermath all dragons were exiled to another realm, leaving only rumours and old stories behind.
In one strand of the story, eleven year old Sirin lives in London with her mother, clinging to the bedtime tales she was told about dragons that once chose human partners and flew free. When her mother's health fails and everyday life grows harsher, Sirin starts to doubt those stories, right up until she sees a streak of silver cutting across the night sky.
Far away, in a parallel world where dragons never left, shepherd boy Joss and his friend Allie live in the ruins of that long war. Their people Lock with dragons, forming deep mental bonds, but the Raptors still hunt for eggs and power. When a rare silver dragon hatches and chooses Joss, he and Lysander become the focus of a new conflict that can spill across worlds.
As these threads twist together, the ruthless Lennix family and their trained Raptors threaten both realms. The ability of silver dragons to travel between worlds draws characters from each side into the same fight, forcing children and dragons to decide who they can trust and what they are willing to risk.
This series blends big aerial battles and portal fantasy with quieter scenes about grief, loyalty and the strain of carrying other people's hopes. It is written for middle grade readers who enjoy dragon bonding stories and shifting points of view, and it stands apart from Angie Sage's other work while still sharing her fondness for found families and slightly offbeat heroes.
