Series background & context

The Righteous series is a suspense series set in Blister Creek, Utah, an isolated polygamist community that tries to keep its problems inside its own walls. The books combine murder mysteries, family drama, religious pressure, and the danger that comes from challenging people who believe they answer to a higher authority.

Jacob Christianson is the main figure at the beginning. He is a medical student from Blister Creek, the son of a church official, and someone who understands the community's rules from the inside. When a woman is murdered, the people in charge want the crime solved without attracting outside law enforcement. Jacob is sent to investigate, along with his teenage sister, Eliza.

That first case shows what makes the series work. Jacob and Eliza are not outside detectives arriving to judge a closed world. They are part of it. They know its language, loyalties, and fears, but that knowledge also makes it harder to tell where duty ends and complicity begins. Every answer can put family members and friends at risk.

As the series continues, Jacob's role changes. He becomes caught between the faith he was raised with and the evidence he cannot ignore. Eliza, meanwhile, faces the limited future expected of young women in the community and searches for a life that belongs to her. Their relationship remains one of the series' most important threads.

In Blister Creek, silence is never neutral.

The main novels begin with The Righteous, followed by Mighty and Strong, The Wicked, and The Blessed and the Damned. Later books, including Destroying Angel, The Gates of Babylon, Hell's Fortress, and Blood of the Faithful, carry the story into new investigations and larger threats. Trial by Fury is a shorter related work.

The tone is dark and tense, with violence and difficult subject matter, but the series is driven as much by loyalty and family as by the mysteries. Readers who enjoy small-town crime stories, closed-community thrillers, and protagonists forced to question the world that formed them should start with The Righteous. It introduces the people, the place, and the secrets that the later books keep uncovering.
