Author bio
Rick Mofina grew up in Belleville, Ontario, east of Toronto, and started writing stories young. He sold his first short story at fifteen, which is one of those facts that sounds tidy now but usually means years of trying, reading, and starting over.
He was writing long before publishing looked like a real plan.
After high school he worked factory jobs for a few years, then went to Carleton University, where he studied journalism, English literature, American detective fiction, and religious responses to death. Somewhere in that stretch of serious reading, he picked up a Mary Higgins Clark novel and read it twice to figure out how the suspense machinery worked. That mix, literary study on one side, page-turning structure on the other, helps explain the kind of writer he became.
Journalism gave him the rest. He started as a summer student at the Toronto Star and went on to work in newsrooms that included the Ottawa Citizen, the Calgary Herald, Southam News, and CanWest. His reporting put him close to the kind of pressure most thriller writers have to imagine: interviews with murderers on death row in Montana and Texas, coverage of a serial-killing case in California, an armored car heist in Las Vegas, flights over Los Angeles with the LAPD, and patrols with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police near the Arctic. He also reported from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
That background shows up all over his fiction.
For years, he wrote before dawn, stealing an hour before work to build novels in private. His first published book, If Angels Fall, arrived in 2000 and introduced crime reporter Tom Reed and homicide inspector Walt Sydowski. Readers who like reporter-driven thrillers usually find a lot to like there: fast pacing, solid procedural detail, and characters who carry their work home with them. He followed it with Cold Fear and Blood of Others, the latter winning Canada's Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel.
He kept returning to reporters because he knows how they think under pressure. In the Jason Wade books, beginning with The Dying Hour, the lead is a younger Seattle crime reporter trying to prove himself. In the Jack Gannon novels, starting with Vengeance Road, the scale gets bigger and rougher. Then came Six Seconds, a standalone that pushed his work onto a more international stage, and later books like Whirlwind, Last Seen, and Missing Daughter, which show how good he is at taking an ordinary family fear and tightening it until it becomes a full-blown nightmare.
Even when the plots get big, the emotional hook stays personal.
Mofina's stories often circle the same pressure points: missing children, battered families, worn-down cops, reporters chasing one more fact, and decent people making bad choices when the clock is running out. He has also written short fiction and won major recognition there too, including another Arthur Ellis Award, and he stepped sideways into younger fantasy with The Only Human.
He lives in Ottawa, Canada. By now he has written more than thirty crime and thriller novels, and the old reporter's habits are still easy to see in the work: clean scenes, sharp detail, and an instinct for exactly where to end a chapter so you tell yourself one more, and then keep going.
