Rich Zahradnik Books in Order

Rich Zahradnik was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, and grew up in nearby Wappinger in the Hudson Valley. He later studied journalism and political science at George Washington University, which set him on the path he would follow for much of his working life. Long before he published novels, he was learning how newsrooms sound, how deadlines feel, and how a city story can change shape by the hour.

He knew early that he wanted to chase stories.

As a teenager, he latched onto reporting with a mix of seriousness and pop culture enthusiasm. He has written that a season of Kolchak: The Night Stalker helped push fourteen-year-old him toward journalism. It is a funny starting point, but it fits the work he would eventually do, and the fiction he would later write.

Zahradnik spent 27 years as a journalist, working as both a reporter and an editor across newspapers, magazines, broadcast, online news, and wire services. His career included editorial posts at CNN, Bloomberg News, AOL, and The Hollywood Reporter. He also co-founded the weekly Peekskill Herald and helped build early digital news projects, so his background runs from local papers to big national media.

Then he made the jump to fiction.

That shift feels natural once you read the Coleridge Taylor books. Beginning with Last Words, Zahradnik writes about a New York reporter in the mid-1970s who keeps digging when institutions would rather he stop. In Drop Dead Punk, A Black Sail, and Lights Out Summer, readers get the same hard-charging instinct, but now filtered through murder cases, newsroom politics, police pressure, and a city that is frayed, loud, and impossible to ignore. The appeal is not just the mysteries. It is the feeling that the author knows what a beat reporter hears in a squad room and what gets missed when a city is too busy to look closely.

New York does a lot of the talking in these books.

One of the pleasures of Zahradnik's fiction is how grounded it feels. The Coleridge Taylor mysteries move through the fiscal crisis, the punk scene, Bicentennial harbor crowds, the Son of Sam era, and the 1977 blackout without turning into history lessons. Readers who like these books usually respond to the mix of pace and detail, plus a lead character who is not a cop or a private eye, but a reporter trying to figure out who is lying, and why.

Zahradnik later stepped outside the Taylor series with The Bone Records, a contemporary thriller set around Coney Island and Brooklyn's Russian immigrant communities. The novel follows Grigg Orlov after his father's murder and turns on old secrets, criminal networks, and a strange piece of evidence from Soviet-era music culture. It won the Silver Falchion Award for Best Mystery, while Lights Out Summer won the Shamus Award for Best Paperback Private Eye Novel.

Across his work, he tends to return to a few things: people on the edges of power, institutions that protect themselves, and characters who keep pushing because the official story does not make sense. His books like the friction between street-level lives and larger systems, whether that means City Hall, the police, organized crime, or the collapsing business of newspapers. Even when the plots move fast, there is usually a strong feeling that somebody overlooked is paying the price.

He lives in Pelham, New York, with his wife, Sheri. Alongside writing fiction, he has spent years helping young reporters learn how to publish real community journalism. He began helping area schools launch newspapers in 2011, and in 2018 he helped start the student-run Pelham Examiner. That mix of novelist and newsroom mentor suits him. He still seems most interested in what a good reported story can do.
