Rex Corvan Books in Order

The Rex Corvan books sit closer to techno-thriller territory than most of Dietz's space war fiction. They are set in a near-future Earth under strain, with environmental pressure, rising seas, overcrowding, political manipulation, and the growing push to get people off the planet and onto Mars. That gives the duology a grounded feeling even when the stakes get very large.

Corvan himself is a reporter, and that matters.

He is not moving through the setting as a soldier or bounty hunter. He moves through it as somebody trying to uncover what powerful people would rather hide. In Matrix Man, that means conspiracy, surveillance, assassination, and a story big enough to reach the White House. His implanted camera eye is a good Dietz detail because it turns journalism into something almost literal: he sees more, records more, and becomes harder to silence without a body count.

The second book, Mars Prime, takes the basic setup and shifts the stage. Mars is not just an escape valve or a science outpost here. It is part of the political struggle over humanity's future. That lets Dietz mix frontier-colony tension with mystery and the larger question of who gets to control expansion beyond Earth. As with the first book, Corvan's job is to keep following the thread even when it leads into places he may not survive.

These books are a good fit if you like science fiction that leans on investigation, media, and institutional conspiracy rather than unit combat. They still have action, but the pressure comes from revelation as much as from firepower. Read them in order, because the second book benefits from the world and character foundation laid by the first.
