Renee Rosen grew up in Akron, Ohio, studied at American University in Washington, D.C., and after time in New York made her home in Chicago. That mix of Midwest roots and big-city curiosity runs through her work. Writing came early for her. In interviews, Rosen has said she was the kid making up stories, poems, and plays long before publication was in sight. She eventually built a career in advertising as a copywriter, but fiction kept pulling at her. She wrote before work, on weekends, and whenever she could carve out the time.

It was a long apprenticeship.

Rosen has said she spent 17 years writing and rewriting her first published novel, Every Crooked Pot, and that it was rejected by more than 300 agents before it finally found a home. That debut, about a girl growing up in Akron with a birthmark over one eye, already showed some of the things Rosen would keep doing well: warmth, family tension, humor, and heroines trying to figure out who they are when the world keeps telling them otherwise.

Her later books moved firmly into historical fiction, and that turned out to be a natural fit. In Dollface, she dives into Prohibition-era Chicago, where a young flapper gets caught between rival gangs. What the Lady Wants follows Delia Spencer and Marshall Field through the Great Chicago Fire and the city's gilded rebuilding. White Collar Girl heads into a 1950s newsroom, where Jordan Walsh fights to be taken seriously as a reporter.

Chicago keeps calling her back.

That makes sense, because Rosen has spoken about how much she loves the city and its mix of grit and glamour. Windy City Blues explores Chess Records, the rise of Chicago blues, and an interracial love story during the Civil Rights era. Park Avenue Summer shifts to 1965 New York and the reinvention of Cosmopolitan under Helen Gurley Brown. In The Social Graces, Fifth Avenue Glamour Girl, and Let's Call Her Barbie, she keeps returning to women who want more than the world is ready to hand them, whether that means social power, a place in business, or the nerve to back a wild new idea.
