Author bio
Renee Pawlish was born in California, but she has spent most of her life in Colorado. She went to college and graduate school there, and she now lives in the foothills west of Denver, a setting that fits the strong Colorado streak running through so much of her fiction.
Before writing became such a big part of her life, Pawlish worked in counseling, with a focus on teen sexual abuse issues and substance abuse. Later she moved into the IT field, and for years she balanced technical work during the day with storytelling at night and on weekends. That mix of practical work and imaginative escape helps explain why her books often feel grounded even when the plots turn wild.
Writing started early.
As a child, she tried to write her own detective stories in the spirit of the Hardy Boys, and creative writing classes were among her favorites in school. She has also talked about learning from writers she admired, including Sue Grafton, Dashiell Hammett, Rex Stout, and Stephen King. You can see that blend in her work, part classic mystery structure, part suspense, part sharp momentum.
A lot of readers first meet her through This Doesn't Happen In The Movies, the opening Reed Ferguson novel. That series follows a Denver private investigator who loves old noir films and has a habit of stumbling into trouble with more heart than polish. The books mix puzzles, humor, and a clean, old-fashioned mystery feel, and they helped establish Pawlish as a writer who enjoys both the mechanics of a whodunit and the fun of a recurring cast.
But she has never stayed in one lane for long. Pawlish has also written the darker supernatural thriller Nephilim Genesis of Evil, the young adventure novel The Emerald Quest, the postwar private eye mystery Web of Deceit, the police procedural Deadly Connections, the action thriller Gunning for Trouble, and the cozy spy caper Antiques, Codes & Conundrums. Readers who move around her bibliography usually find the same core strengths, strong setup, fast pacing, and characters who have to think their way through danger.
That range is part of the appeal.
She clearly likes different kinds of stories, and she seems happy to follow an idea wherever it leads, whether that means a wisecracking Denver detective, a haunted mountain town, a teen treasure hunter, or a retired nurse who keeps ending up in international intrigue. Colorado shows up often, especially in the Reed Ferguson, Sarah Spillman, Dewey Webb, and horror books, but so does her love of travel. She has said she has visited dozens of countries, and that curiosity gives several of her later series a wider map.
Outside fiction, Pawlish has written about loving hiking, biking, guitar, old movies, football, sports memorabilia, and first-edition books. She has also mentioned spending time at her parents' cabin in the hills outside Boulder, which helped inspire Taylor Crossing in Nephilim Genesis of Evil. Those details help make sense of her work. Her books often feel written by someone who likes places, hobbies, history, and the small quirks that make people memorable.
If you start with one of her mysteries, there is a good chance you will notice that human side right away. The crimes matter, the puzzles matter, but so do the people carrying the story. That is true whether she is writing a noir-flavored private eye novel, a police procedural, a thriller, or something with a ghost in it.
