Renee Erickson Books in Order

Renee Erickson is a Seattle area chef, writer, and restaurant owner whose work is tied closely to the Pacific Northwest. She grew up in Woodinville, outside Seattle, and has said those early years were full of berry picking, gardening, and summer trips for salmon and crab. That background still shows up in the way she cooks and writes.

Place matters to her, and it always has.

Before restaurants took over, Erickson was headed toward art. She spent time at the University of Oregon on a softball scholarship, then graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA in painting and printmaking. While she was in school, she took a job at Boat Street Café to help pay the bills. It was meant to be practical. Instead, she fell for restaurant life, moved from the dining room into the kitchen, and found a kind of creativity there that clicked.

She was not classically trained, and she did not arrive with a neat career plan. In 1998, at 25, she bought Boat Street Café, the small Seattle restaurant where she had been working. By her own account, she learned on the fly. What she did have was taste, nerve, and a family willing to help. Boat Street became the place where she figured out how she wanted to cook: seasonal, warm, a little French around the edges, and never too stiff.

That is where her voice formed.

Over time Erickson built a group of restaurants that helped shape modern Seattle dining, including The Walrus and the Carpenter, The Whale Wins, Barnacle, and Bateau. Her food leans on oysters, crab, vegetables, good bread, bright herbs, and the simple pleasure of excellent ingredients treated carefully. There is often a European touch, but the feeling is Northwest, casual, and generous. In 2016 she won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northwest. She has also worked in restaurant design, which fits with the way she thinks about food, rooms, and how people gather.

Her books carry the same mix of food, mood, and storytelling. A Boat, a Whale & a Walrus, published in 2014, brings together menus, stories, and recipes shaped by Puget Sound ingredients and her restaurant world. It won a 2015 PNBA Book Award. Getaway, from 2021, opens the map wider, moving through Rome, Paris, Normandy, Baja California, London, and Seattle with recipes and cocktails that feel part travel diary, part dinner plan. Sunlight & Breadcrumbs, published in 2024, turns inward again. It focuses on everyday food and on the small choices, texture, color, crunch, that can make a simple meal feel alive. Across all three, readers tend to like the same thing: the food looks thoughtful, but it still feels made for real life.

That may be the best way to describe Erickson's appeal. She likes meals that are generous, seasonal, and built for sharing, whether that means a crab feast, snacks with drinks, or a weeknight plate with one smart finishing touch. She still lives in Seattle, serves on the board of the University of Washington's School of Art + Art History + Design, and keeps one foot in art and one in food. Her career makes those two worlds look less separate than most people assume.
