Series background & context
Reign of Shadows is a compact YA fantasy duology with a strong fairy tale shape and a darker than usual setting. The kingdom of Relhok has been trapped in perpetual darkness since an eclipse, and that single image tells you almost everything about the mood. This is a world where survival is hard, monsters move in the shadows, and power has curdled.
The heroine, Luna, has spent years hidden away in a tower in the Black Woods, with the world believing she is dead. She is not just a girl longing for more, though. She is the lost princess of a broken kingdom, and once she escapes with Fowler, an archer who has his own secrets, the story opens into a dangerous journey through cursed land and political traps.
Jordan keeps the fantasy readable and immediate. The world building is there, but it is attached to emotion and motion, dark dwellers, missing rulers, dangerous roads, rival kingdoms, and the question of what kind of ruler Luna could become. The romance between Luna and Fowler gives the books warmth, but the series never lets them exist in a bubble. Their bond is always tangled up with truth, power, and survival.
Rise of Fire pushes the story beyond the first escape and into a larger struggle, where Luna has to face both what she is and what Relhok needs. The series is short, so it moves quickly, but it still finds room for betrayal, longing, and some genuinely eerie atmosphere.
If you like YA fantasy that feels half quest story and half dark fairy tale, with a princess heroine who has to grow into her power the hard way, this is an appealing corner of Jordan's catalogue.
