Author bio

Regina Jeffers was born in Huntington, West Virginia, on the Ohio River, and she still talks about the place with real affection. She grew up as an only child, a Navy military brat, in a family and region where stories were part of daily life. Appalachia, with its porch talk, songs, and long memory, clearly left a mark on her.

She was an early, hungry reader. Jeffers has said she read Emma at nine and soon after fell for Mr. Darcy, which tells you a lot about where her fiction would eventually lead. She skipped grades, was part of the Sputnik generation, and entered college at fifteen.

For most of her working life, writing was not yet the public job. Teaching was. Jeffers spent nearly four decades teaching English in public schools in West Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina, and she also worked as a language arts and media literacy consultant. Along the way she earned recognition such as the Time Warner Star Teacher award and the Martha Holden Jennings Scholar honor, and she served on state and national education committees.

Then a student called her bluff.

While teaching an Advanced Placement language class, she complained about a supposedly historical novel that felt too modern to her. A student shot back, in effect, if you know how to do it better, do it yourself. Jeffers took the dare, rewrote Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view, and self-published Darcy's Passions. She has said she never expected much to come of it. Instead, the book found readers, a publisher noticed, and an author career that started on a whim turned into a large bibliography.

That second career drew on a lot of older ones. Jeffers taught theater, trained dance teams, worked as a choreographer, and even danced professionally when she was younger. She often describes her writing process in those terms: a scene plays in her head like a performance, she revises it mentally for days, and only then puts it on paper. She still prefers to draft longhand, which feels fitting for someone so interested in rhythm and movement.

Her range is broader than one label suggests. Some readers come first for the Austen books, especially Darcy's Passions, Captain Wentworth's Persuasion, and The Phantom of Pemberley. Others head for her linked Regency romances such as A Touch of Velvet or later romantic suspense like Angel Comes to the Devil's Keep. What they tend to find across all of them is a fondness for proud heroes, capable women, emotional misunderstandings, and plots that are never content to sit still for long.

She likes a little mayhem with her courtship.

That mix of romance and danger shows up again and again in her work. Jeffers writes about family duty, class pressure, second chances, hidden identities, and the moment when stubborn people finally decide honesty is less painful than silence. Even when she is playing in familiar Austen territory, she usually adds a mystery, a threat, or a complicated moral choice. These days she lives outside Charlotte, North Carolina, where she writes, researches, travels, gardens, and keeps up with her grandchildren. The teacher never really disappeared, either. She still sounds like someone who loves history, loves language, and likes sharing both.
