Series background & context

Rawhide & Lace brings together two Diana Palmer romances with very different routes into a relationship. The title novel follows a damaged former attachment, while Unlikely Lover uses a relative's matchmaking to put two people in the same place. Both stories place attraction beside the stories people tell themselves about someone else. The couples must look beyond hurt or a misleading first impression before they can decide what a future together would mean.

In Rawhide and Lace, Erin has tried to leave Ty Wade behind after a period of devastating loss. An accident has damaged her life and ended her modeling career, while the loss of a baby makes the relationship especially painful to revisit. Ty now wants her back, but his wish does not erase what she associates with him. Erin faces more than the return of an attractive man. She must consider whether reconnecting could help rebuild her life or expose her to further hurt.

The romance depends on what the past means to both people now.

Erin's former world of modeling gives the title's contrast a concrete place in the story. The woman once associated with glamour is trying to recover a sense of direction, making Ty's renewed interest emotionally difficult to assess. Familiar desire may still exist, but it cannot by itself answer questions about responsibility and trust. Their shared history makes the possible reunion more complicated than a new courtship, because choosing each other would also require facing what went wrong before.

Unlikely Lover begins with Aunt Lillian presenting Mari and Ward Jessup with two misleading accounts. Mari believes she is being asked to help an elderly, failing oilman write his memoirs. Ward is told that Lillian's niece is vulnerable and in need of care. Each agrees to the arrangement out of concern, only to discover that the person who arrives does not match the description. Ward's ranch becomes the setting for a meeting neither would have planned honestly. Realizing that they have been maneuvered together does not make the attraction disappear.

The tone ranges from an emotionally difficult second chance to a lighter matchmaking setup, while keeping romance at the center of both books. One couple has too much shared history to ignore; the other begins with expectations manufactured by someone else. Read Rawhide and Lace before Unlikely Lover for publication order. The pair offers separate love stories connected by Palmer's interest in guarded people who need to reconsider an established judgment before they can respond to the person in front of them, rather than the version they expected to meet.
