Author bio
Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, but she has often said that Dublin feels like home because that is where she spent most of her life. That mix of places matters in her fiction. Her books often carry both Irish roots and a strong sense of travel, displacement, and starting over.
Books came early.
As a child, she spent Saturdays going to the library with her father and her two sisters, then heading out for ice cream after. She has also said she drove people mad with endless questions about war, politics, and the 1916 Rising. Her grandmother finally told her to write her stories down, partly so other people could enjoy them, and partly, it seems, so the family could get a little peace.
That was the first push toward writing, and it stuck.
Before fiction became her full-time work, Wesson spent time in London and worked in the City. Later, after marrying and raising a family, she decided that life no longer fit. She stepped away from that world, returned to the stories that had always been there, and slowly turned writing into a career.
Her books show what she keeps coming back to. In Katie, she writes about Irish migration, hardship, and the hope of building a new life in the American West. In Orphan Train Escape, she turns to the children sent west from New York and the women trying to protect them. A Home for Unloved Orphans and A Baby on the Doorstep move into Depression-era America, where poverty, kindness, and sheer stubbornness all sit side by side. Then novels like Darkness Falls and When's Mummy Coming? shift into wartime Europe, where survival can depend on courage, quick thinking, and small acts of loyalty.
She likes the parts of history that feel close to the bone.
That usually means ordinary people under pressure. Young women with no safe choices. Children who need protecting. Families split by migration, poverty, or war. Readers who pick up Wesson tend to know they will get emotional historical fiction, but also something warm at the center, a sense that love, faith, friendship, or community might still make a difference.
Her settings move around, but they are connected by that same interest in people trying to hold on. She writes about Irish immigrants, frontier towns, New York tenements, orphan trains, occupied France, wartime Germany and England, and rural Irish lives shaped by secrecy and loss. Even when the backdrop is big, the stories usually stay personal.
Wesson now lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When she is not writing, she has said she is usually reading, watching films for research, or spending time with her family. She also travels back to Ireland regularly, which feels fitting for a writer whose work so often circles back to memory, home, and the long pull of the past.
