Rachel Lynn Solomon is a Seattle native who writes love stories for teens and adults, usually about smart, messy people trying to work out who they are and how to ask for what they need. Her books move between YA and adult romance, but they share the same pull: sharp banter, emotional honesty, Jewish characters who feel fully lived in, and a lot of affection for people who do not have life neatly sorted out.

She grew up in the area, studied journalism at the University of Washington, and spent several years working in media, including The Seattle Times and KUOW Public Radio. That background gave her a close-up view of deadlines, storytelling, and the strange intimacy of speaking to an audience you cannot see, something she later folded into The Ex Talk.

The road to fiction was not perfectly straight. Solomon has said that an early manuscript was queried as women's fiction, then a critique partner pointed out that her voice felt YA. She went back to that shelf, read deeply, and found the lane that clicked. Her debut, You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone, was published in 2018.

She likes ambitious characters, and she is not afraid to make them a little difficult.

That shows up in early books like You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone and Our Year of Maybe, which dig into illness, friendship, first love, and the pressure young people put on themselves. Solomon has also spoken about wanting to write the kinds of Jewish characters she did not often see growing up, and that wish runs through much of her work. Even when the subject matter is heavy, the people at the center feel funny, stubborn, hopeful, and very real.

Then came Today Tonight Tomorrow, a Seattle-set rivals-to-lovers story that unfolds over one long night, and See You Yesterday, which turns a disastrous first day of college into a time-loop romance. Readers who love Solomon tend to come back for that mix of high-concept setup and grounded feeling. The books are funny and swoony, but they are also full of nerves, longing, and the awkwardness of trying to become yourself.

Her adult debut, The Ex Talk, pulled directly from her public radio experience, and later novels kept widening the frame. Weather Girl pairs workplace chaos with tenderness and mental health honesty, Business or Pleasure turns an awkward one-night stand into a surprisingly sweet collaboration, and What Happens in Amsterdam leans into second chances and reinvention. Across all of them, she writes chemistry well, but she also pays attention to grief, insecurity, family, and the uneasy business of growing up, even when the characters are already adults.

Off the page, Solomon has her own stash of memorable details: in high school she sang and played keyboard in an all-girl band, and she once joined a Guinness World Record gathering for natural redheads. She now lives in Amsterdam with her husband. Her books have been translated into 20 languages and optioned for film, but the appeal is still pretty simple, she makes room for complicated people to be loved.
