Author bio

Rachel Dylan writes the kind of suspense that knows how law offices work, how cases are built, and how quickly a professional life can tilt into danger. She has practiced law for close to two decades, including time as a litigator at one of the nation's top law firms. That background runs through her fiction in a very practical way. The stakes feel big because the work feels real.

She did not come to writing by way of a tidy career plan. In her own telling, she wrote poems and stories as a child and read constantly, but books became serious later. During her fourth year at a large law firm, worn down by stress and wanting something that felt like hers, she decided to try writing a novel.

The first manuscript wasn't faith-based, and it was only the beginning.

What mattered was that writing stuck. It became an outlet from the pressure of legal practice and a place where she could follow different kinds of questions, not just legal ones but emotional and spiritual ones too. She has said that a later return to her faith changed the direction of her work and helped her find her voice, which explains why some of her books lean harder into faith while others stay closer to straight suspense.

Her debut novel was Out of Hiding, a witness protection story with a private investigator forced to face the murder that shattered her childhood. From there she expanded fast. The Windy Ridge books, beginning with Trial & Tribulations, mix lawsuits, small-town tension, and spiritual warfare. They are unusual books, part legal thriller, part faith-driven battle story, and they show how willing Dylan is to push beyond standard courtroom suspense.

Law never really leaves the page.

In Atlanta Justice, Dylan centers three women attorneys in Atlanta and lets each book build around a different legal crisis. Deadly Proof tackles a pharmaceutical cover-up, Lone Witness follows a prosecutor who becomes the only witness to a double homicide, and Breach of Trust opens with a murdered colleague and a trail that leads into corporate espionage. These are the novels many readers point to first, because the legal details feel grounded without slowing down the plot.

She also shifts easily into government and intelligence suspense. The Capital Intrigue trilogy, starting with End Game, moves to Washington and brings in the FBI, NCIS, the CIA, the DEA, the State Department, and Diplomatic Security. More recently, Death Follows Her and Secrets Chase Her launched the Deadly Justice series, which pushes her work in a darker direction with powerful lawyers, FBI investigations, and threats that feel personal from the first pages.

The awards help show how strongly these books have landed. Deadly Proof picked up major recognition, and Lone Witness won both the Holt Medallion and the Maggie Award. Dylan lives in Michigan with her husband and furkids. That everyday detail somehow fits her work, which balances sharp professional worlds with people who still have homes, histories, loyalties, and limits.
