Psalms of Herod Books in Order

Psalms of Herod is one of the clearest reminders that Esther M Friesner is not only a comic fantasist. This duology is dark from the ground up. It imagines a ruined future America shaped by ecological disaster, disease, and a hard, punitive religious order in which women are treated as property and fertility is watched, judged, and controlled.

The books do not soften that world.

The series follows Becca of Wiserways, who grows up in a rural stead where the rules are strict and the consequences are brutal. What starts as survival inside one closed, oppressive place gradually widens into a larger journey. In The Psalms of Herod and The Sword of Mary, Becca moves through different parts of this society and keeps discovering that power can wear many costumes while still doing the same damage.

That is the real tension. The books are post-apocalyptic on the surface, but they are most interested in who gets believed, who gets used, and what happens when faith is turned into social machinery. Becca is compelling because she is not allowed the luxury of innocence for long. She has to learn quickly, and the reader learns with her.

So expect a harsher shelf than Chicks in Chainmail or the lighter fantasy novels. The reward is a grim, forceful story about control, escape, and the stubborn will to keep being fully human inside a system built to crush that.
