Series background & context
The Protectors, also known as the Vigilante Cops series, follows Oakland police officers Connor Bradwick and Ellie James. Both care deeply about the people in their beat, but they have become frustrated by a system that seems to return dangerous criminals to the street while ordinary residents pay the price.
In The Protectors, a call involving kidnapped children pushes Connor past a line he cannot uncross. Ellie witnesses what happens and becomes tied to his decision. The pair begin moving beyond reactive policing toward a more aggressive effort to prevent gang activity, drug dealing, and violent crime before it can spread through their community.
Oakland is not just a backdrop here. The city gives the series its pressure and purpose, with neighborhood safety, corruption, gangs, and official indifference all shaping the cases. Connor brings military experience and a physical presence to the job. Ellie is quick-witted, determined, and unwilling to be treated as an observer in someone else's crusade.
Their actions draw attention from powerful people as well as criminals. What begins as street-level enforcement grows into a conflict involving organized crime, political corruption, and threats with broader connections. The premise is blunt and morally charged: what happens when two officers decide the normal rules are not protecting the people they swore to serve?
The second book, Halloween Rave, returns Connor and Ellie to Oakland for another dangerous case. The series keeps the focus on their partnership and the difficult line between protecting a community and becoming the kind of force that answers to no one. It is police action fiction with a dark, confrontational edge.
Connor and Ellie mean well. That does not make their choices easy.
Start with The Protectors. It introduces the officers, their city, and the moment that changes the direction of their work. Read Halloween Rave next for a continuation of the partnership and its consequences.
