The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding
by Alexandra Bracken
2017
Twelve‑year‑old Prosper Redding discovers a centuries‑old demon living inside him, furious at the Redding family for breaking a deadly contract. With only days to break the curse, Prosper is whisked to Salem and into a world of witches, fiends, and unsettling family secrets.
Series background & context
Prosper Redding’s story starts in a wealthy New England family that’s built its reputation on charm, money, and a very old secret. Prosper thinks he’s the one ordinary Redding—until a failed exorcism reveals there’s a centuries‑old demon, Alastor, lodged inside his body.
Generations earlier, Prosper’s ancestor struck a bargain with this malefactor, trading service for success and then breaking the deal. The duology asks what it means to inherit that kind of betrayal. Prosper grows up in the shadow of relatives who would rather erase him than admit what their prosperity cost, and his fear of being forgettable collides with the fact that his body has become a battleground for someone else’s revenge.
Most of the first book unfolds in and around Salem, Massachusetts, where Prosper hides out with eccentric witch relatives in a creaky, possibly haunted house. Alastor’s snide commentary is always in his head, turning even quiet scenes at school or town festivals into a running argument between boy and demon.
Bracken layers in a full hidden world alongside the pumpkin‑spice streets of New England—fiends that feed on human emotions, goblins and hobs lurking around the edges, and magical contracts that can’t be shrugged off. Prosper has only days to outwit Alastor and break the curse before the demon claims his soul for good.
In The Last Life of Prince Alastor, the balance shifts again. To rescue his twin sister from the ruthless queen Pyra, Prosper must travel Downstairs into the demon realm itself, guided by the very fiend who wants to own him. The Third Realm is strange even to Alastor, ruled by new powers and threatened by an encroaching Void that devours everything in its path.
As boy and demon cross treacherous courts and filthy back alleys of the underworld, their relationship turns from simple hatred into something more complicated. Prosper starts to see how Alastor was wronged centuries ago; Alastor, in turn, has to confront what he’s willing to sacrifice for his own people. The series explores privilege, grudges, and the choice to break cycles of cruelty rather than repeat them.
Despite all the curses and creepy creatures, these books are firmly middle‑grade at heart. The scares sit alongside jokes, bickering dialogue, and very human worries about bullying, siblings, and fitting in. If you like your autumn stories a little spooky but ultimately hopeful, the Prosper Redding duology leans into that cozy‑creepy sweet spot.
