Series background & context

The Princes books are Elizabeth Hoyt’s first historical series, set in early Georgian England and linked by three full length novels and a later novella. Despite the title, the “princes” here are not fairy tale royals but flawed, often damaged men whose lives are upended by very determined women.

Each story stands on its own, yet they share a common mood. The settings move between quiet country villages and the seedier corners of London, and the romances are unapologetically sensual. Hoyt leans into cross class matches, unpolished emotion, and the idea that desire can be both messy and deeply human.

In The Raven Prince, an impoverished widow, Anna Wren, takes the scandalous step of becoming secretary to Edward de Raaf, the scarred Earl of Swartingham. Their wary working relationship turns intimate, and a masked encounter in a notorious brothel forces both characters to decide what they actually want from life, not just what society expects.

The Leopard Prince flips a familiar trope by giving the title and property to Lady Georgina Maitland, an unmarried woman who owns her own estate. Her steward, Harry Pye, is practical, stubborn, and very much below her in station. When sheep are poisoned and Harry is blamed, Georgina chooses his side, pulling them into a mystery that lays bare the worst and best of the local gentry.

The Serpent Prince is the darkest of the three, following country gentlewoman Lucy Craddock Hayes after she discovers an unconscious, naked man in a ditch. Simon Iddesleigh is a viscount driven by the need to avenge his brother. Lucy’s steady affection collides with his hunger for revenge, creating a story that slides between cozy domestic scenes and moments of real danger.

The coda to the trilogy, The Ice Princess, returns to Aphrodite’s Grotto, the brothel that appears in The Raven Prince. Coral Smythe, now the masked madam of the house, is auctioned off for seven nights to a stern naval captain who dislikes everything she represents. Over the course of a short, intense novella, Hoyt peels back their defenses in small, careful steps.

Across the series, readers can expect fairy tale snippets at the head of each chapter, a bit of gallows humor, and heroines who are more practical than perfect. The books reward being read in order, since side characters drift from one story to the next and the tone grows steadily darker before the hopeful final novella brings the circle closed.
