Series background & context
The Posleen War series, also known as Legacy of the Aldenata, is John Ringo’s breakout military science fiction universe. It starts when a seemingly benevolent Galactic Federation warns Earth that a race of rapacious centaur-like aliens, the Posleen, is on the march and offers advanced technology in exchange for human soldiers.
At first it looks like a straightforward bargain, but the fine print is ugly. Humanity is drafted to fight on distant worlds even as the clock ticks down toward an invasion of Earth itself, and the Federation’s ruling species, the Darhel, have plans that may be as dangerous as the Posleen. Ringo uses that setup to explore everything from front-line infantry action to black-ops conspiracies and generational fallout.
The core novels—beginning with A Hymn Before Battle, Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, and Hell’s Faire—follow characters like Michael O’Neal as they try to hold the line against overwhelming alien numbers. Later books branch out. Some focus on Cally O’Neal and the clandestine Bane Sidhe, others on rejuvenated veterans in Europe, naval campaigns in Panama, or even the shattered Posleen trying to find a future of their own.
Expect detailed battles full of powered armor, artillery, and hard choices, but also political maneuvering, questions about collaboration and resistance, and the human cost of endless war. If you like your military SF big, bloody, and full of recurring characters whose lives you can track over decades, the Posleen War sequence delivers exactly that.
