In The Secrets of Paper and Ink, counselor Sophia Barrett heads overseas after her own life has gone sideways and ends up above Ginny Rose's bookstore in Port Willis. Ginny is trying to save the shop while dealing with serious trouble in her marriage, and Sophia finds herself drawn into a much older story through the journal of Emily Fairfax, a Victorian governess who dreamed of writing and loved a man she could not easily claim. That mix of personal recovery and literary mystery sets the tone for everything that follows.

The later Port Willis books shift into shorter holiday romances, but they keep the same emotional roots. Like a Winter Snow follows Joy Beckman, who is so busy caring for everyone else that she hardly knows what to do when love appears. Like a Christmas Dream gives Sarah a chance to step out from under her parents' control and reconnect with her sister. Like a Silver Bell centers on Kara, a survivor of abuse trying to rebuild trust while helping stage a Christmas fundraiser. Like a Holiday Inn brings in Rebecca Trengrouse, a struggling innkeeper who gets snowed in with a guest she does not entirely trust.

What links the books is not a giant cliffhanger or one big mystery. It is the town. Characters reappear, friendships deepen, family ties get tugged in new directions, and local places, the bookstore, the bakery, the inn, the village streets, start to feel familiar. You can read the books one at a time, but they are even more satisfying in order because you get to watch Port Willis become a place rather than just a backdrop.

The tone is cozy, especially in the Christmas stories, but Harrel does not pretend life is tidy. Caregiving, grief, controlling parents, financial pressure, shame, loneliness, and the aftereffects of abuse all show up here. What keeps the series inviting is that the hard parts are balanced by warmth, faith, humor, and the sense that people can still choose a better next step. If you like small-town stories with a little sea air, a little seasonal sparkle, and a lot of heart, Port Willis is an easy place to settle in.
