Planet of Blood and Ice Books in Order

This series, also grouped under the Cathedrals of Glass name, starts with ten teenagers who have been labeled deviant and packed onto an automated ship for reeducation. They never reach their destination. Instead, the ship crashes on the frozen planet Valkrys, and the story turns into a survival thriller with a strong dystopian edge.

Sola is the key figure. Back home she got into trouble for roaming, disconnecting, and refusing to fit neatly inside a controlled system. On Valkrys, those same traits become useful. She is better prepared than most of the others for a world that demands movement, improvisation, and direct contact with danger. That does not make her invincible. It just means she notices sooner that survival will take more than waiting for rescue.

The planet matters as much as any character. Valkrys is harsh, predatory, and full of evidence that it has a deeper history than the authorities back home ever admitted. The cold is constant, but the real unease comes from what lies under the surface, ancient structures, strange crystal spaces, and the growing sense that the castaways have wandered into a place someone wanted hidden.

It is a cold book, in a good way.

As the series continues, simple survival gives way to stranger pressures. The group has to deal with distrust, changing loyalties, and mental or psychic effects that make it even harder to know what is real and who can be relied on. Hartley keeps the physical danger high, but he is equally interested in what isolation and fear do to a group that was never especially united to begin with.

If you like your YA science fiction tense rather than shiny, this is a good fit. Expect hostile weather, sharp group conflict, buried secrets, and a heroine whose stubborn refusal to behave properly may be the only reason anyone gets out alive. The series mixes crash-survival urgency with the slower, creepier realization that the planet itself is part of the mystery.
