Because so many books involve visitors from Chicago or Los Angeles brushing up against Wisconsin life, the series gets a nice balance between local color and fish-out-of-water comedy.

There is also a gentle through line about reinvention. A lot of these characters arrive embarrassed, heartbroken, overworked, or convinced romance is not worth the trouble.
