Nerys Leigh's Pinkerton Matchmaker stories take the romantic tension of her westerns and add cases, disguises, and a lot more travel. The hook is simple and a little audacious: women answer an ad to become Pinkerton detectives, then learn that their first assignment requires a temporary marriage to the male agent who will train them. That arrangement means every book starts with instant friction. Nobody quite trusts the setup, nobody is thrilled by being told who to partner with, and feelings have a habit of appearing at the least convenient moment.

An Agent for Belle opens Leigh's run with Isabelle Wood, who is trying to dodge her parents' marriage plans and finds herself in a different kind of arranged match with Valentine Stevens. Their case sends them undercover into a burlesque show in Cheyenne, where sabotage, stage fright, jealousy, and performance all become part of the job. It is a lively entry point because it shows what these books do well: banter, danger, and two people trying very hard not to enjoy each other.

An Agent for Clara turns darker and more urban. Clara Lee has long wanted to solve mysteries, and her temporary husband, Tobias Campbell, is an unusual, serious investigator with a mind bent toward forensic detail. Their hunt for a missing woman drags them into the gang-run underworld of New York. The setting change matters. Leigh keeps the romance warm, but she lets the city feel crowded, risky, and morally messy in a way that contrasts nicely with her smaller western towns.

Then Leigh changes the mood again.

An Agent for Kitty follows the shyest heroine of the four. Kitty wants courage more than excitement, and she gets both when she and flirtatious Ben Riley head into the Utah wilderness to investigate a stolen dinosaur skull. The case gives the book a lighter, almost adventure-story energy. An Agent for Phoebe goes in a different direction with an older heroine. Phoebe has already survived one bad marriage and thinks independence sounds far better than romance. Her Colorado case with Jonah Hays, involving a missing accountant and a fight to survive in the mountains, pushes the suspense harder and gives the emotional stakes extra weight.

What links these books is not one ongoing plot, but a shared promise. Each one gives you a capable woman learning what she can do, a male partner who has to learn respect as much as affection, and a mystery strong enough to stand on its own. The settings shift from theater stages to city streets to fossil digs and mining country, so the series keeps moving.

These are Christian historical romances with more outward action than Leigh's Green Hill Creek novels. There are clues, undercover jobs, reluctant marriages, and moments where trust has to come before comfort. If you like western romance with a detective-story spine, Leigh's Pinkerton books are a very easy place to start.
