Pinchbeck Peer starts in 1780 with Fabius Verstappen, a young gentleman whose family’s money troubles push him out of Cambridge and into the Militia. He is not prepared for the world, but he is strong, likable, and very handy with his fists.

A drunken round of betting leaves him owing far more than he can pay. Rather than face debtor’s prison, Fabius runs. On the road to Liverpool he falls in with a prizefighting stable and becomes Gentleman Jim, a bare-knuckle fighter with enough talent to make money and enough sense to know that the Ring may not be a permanent future.

Then aristocratic opportunity appears.

A wealthy Marquess wants a healthy young gentleman to marry his daughter and strengthen the family line. Fabius accepts for position and money, then discovers that marriage and rank are not as simple as a bargain. The series follows him through social reinvention, money-making, politics, family obligations, and the uneasy shift from Georgian habits toward a newer Britain.

Wareham enjoys the friction between surface respectability and the less polished facts beneath it. Fabius may become Lord Oakham, but his past as Gentleman Jim never fully disappears. He is useful because he is not quite conventional, and vulnerable for the same reason.

The later books widen the frame to canals, finance, agriculture, coal, iron, steam, inheritance, and children who may not fit the boxes society has made for them. Read in order, beginning with The Pinchbeck Peer: Book 1. The series depends on Fabius’s slow change from runaway undergraduate to a man trying to decide what sort of future Britain is going to have.
