Series background & context

Pillage is one of Obert Skye's darker fantasy series. It begins with Beck Phillips after the death of his mother, when he is sent to live with an uncle he barely knows in the strange town of Kingsplot. The house is enormous, unsettling, and packed with secrets. His uncle is eccentric, the manor is hiding far too much, and Beck soon learns that the trouble in his family goes much deeper than one painful loss.

Dragons are involved.

The first book, Pillage, builds its tension through hidden history. Beck discovers he can make things grow, which would already be enough to wreck an ordinary week, but the real danger comes from his family line. Dragon stones, greed, curses, and old damage are tangled together, and Kingsplot feels like a town that has been trying to ignore that fact for years. Beck is impulsive, funny in a dry way, and not nearly as careful as he should be, which gives the books some humor without taking away the threat.

He does not face the danger alone. Kate and Wyatt become central as the trilogy moves into Choke and Ambush. Their friendship matters because Beck is constantly pulled in two directions, toward the people trying to help him and toward the darker inheritance built into the Pillage name. In Choke, the last dragon egg makes that struggle more personal. By Ambush, Beck's choices are tied to his father's safety, the future of Kingsplot, and the chance to end the family's cycle before it destroys even more.

What makes this series feel different from Leven Thumps is the mood. The fantasy is less dreamlike and more gothic. Hidden rooms, buried history, dangerous plants, and old family sins do a lot of the work that portals and magical kingdoms do elsewhere in Skye's fiction. The dragons are not just there to make things exciting. They are there to test Beck, especially his curiosity, his grief, and the part of him that wants power even when he knows better.

Beck's worst enemy is often Beck.

Readers who like secret powers, dangerous houses, and fantasy shaped by family trouble usually settle into this trilogy fast. Beck is grieving, angry, curious, and not always honest, even with himself, which gives the story a rougher, more uneasy edge than Skye's broader comedies. If you want dragons with real consequences, and a hero who keeps having to decide what kind of person he is becoming, Pillage is the series to try.
