PI Hanlon Books in Order

The PI Hanlon books pick up after Hanlon's police career has gone badly off course. She has left the Metropolitan Police under a cloud and heads north, tired, angry, and not especially interested in starting over. Of course, starting over is exactly what she has to do. The result is a series that keeps Hanlon's hard edge but shifts the mood from urban police procedural to something more isolated, more atmospheric, and often more personal.

Scotland matters here, a lot. The west coast, Jura, Argyll, Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Highlands, and the smaller islands all shape the feel of these books. Ferries, bad weather, lonely roads, temporary lodgings, and tight local communities create a very different kind of pressure from the London novels. Hanlon is still dealing with violence and deception, but now she is often doing it in places where everyone knows one another, outsiders are noticed immediately, and silence can be as useful as an alibi.

Without a badge behind her, Hanlon has to work differently. She takes jobs that look manageable on the surface, then finds the old trouble waiting underneath. In Silenced For Good she heads to Jura for a break and is drawn into a death at a shabby hotel. In Missing For Good she is hired to trace Aurora, the estranged daughter of a wealthy art dealer, and the case widens into drugs, family damage, and serious danger. In Buried For Good a protection job on a remote island retreat turns into a claustrophobic murder hunt.

That shift from police officer to private investigator changes the stakes in interesting ways. Hanlon has fewer formal powers and less protection, but she also has more room to follow her instincts. She can take risks nobody in the police would sign off on. She can dig into lives the police might dismiss. She can also be ignored, lied to, and cornered more easily. That makes the books feel rawer. There is less institutional backup and more dependence on nerve, physical courage, and a willingness to keep going after common sense says stop.

The tone is still dark, but it is dark in a different way. These novels lean into mood, landscape, and the feeling that people carry their past around with them whether they mean to or not. Hanlon remains blunt, forceful, and deeply suspicious, yet the Scottish setting gives the series more space to show her alone with her thoughts, her anger, and the mess she has made of parts of her life.

The weather helps.

If the DCI Hanlon books are about a woman fighting the system from inside, the PI Hanlon books are about what happens after the system spits her out. They keep the grit, but add wild settings, smaller circles of suspects, and a stronger sense of exile. For readers who like damaged investigators, strong atmosphere, and crime fiction where place really counts, this is a very good next step.
