Phasmata

by William D Arand

2025

Ryan Hale survived a brutal convoy mission and came back able to see ghosts, guided by an undead boy who has turned his life into a quest log. A new job in haunted Noxfield, West Virginia offers a fresh start, but the town’s secrets may be worse than its spirits.

Series background & context

Phasmata is an urban fantasy horror blend about a man who should have died and did not quite come back alone. Ryan Hale’s life derailed after a routine military convoy run went bad. He survived, but the experience left him able to see ghosts, and his closest companion became an undead boy named Carl who has turned Ryan’s life into something like a video game, complete with quests, perks, and levels.

At the start of the book, Ryan is drifting, more ghost than man in his own life. A new job offer in the deeply haunted town of Noxfield, West Virginia looks like a chance to reset. Instead he finds himself working with a new boss, a mostly female crew, and an equipment loadout tailored for someone who can interact with the dead on their own terms.

The story leans into atmosphere and creeping dread as much as combat. Ryan’s system powers push him to help trapped spirits move on, but the human problems beneath each haunting are often uglier than the ghosts themselves. Phasmata feels more self contained than some of Arand’s other series while still carrying his trademarks: competence porn, messy relationships, and a world where power always comes with a price tag.
