Author bio
Peter Nealen is a former Reconnaissance Marine and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan who turned that experience into a very wide-ranging fiction career. He stepped onto the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego in 2003, moved into Recon training about a year and a half later, and after the Basic Reconnaissance Course deployed twice to Iraq with Bravo Company, 1st Recon Battalion. Later, after more schools and workups, he deployed to Afghanistan with Force Reconnaissance Company, I MEF.
He did not come to action fiction from a distance.
By the time his active service ended, he had qualified as a Combatant Diver, Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist, Marine Scout/Sniper, Scout/Sniper Team Leader, and Combat Tracker. That background shows up in his novels in obvious ways, with the weapons, movement, and tactical detail, but it also shows up in the smaller things. His books care about planning, friction, uncertainty, and the way even a good team can get boxed in by bad information.
The path into writing seems to have grown naturally out of that world. The idea that became Task Force Desperate started while he was in Iraq, and he began drafting the book in 2011 during a training period at Twenty-Nine Palms. That novel launched the American Praetorians books, and it also set a pattern that still fits a lot of his work: capable people, ugly missions, and a world where the official story is rarely the whole story.
Then he kept widening the map.
In Fury in the Gulf and the later Brannigan's Blackhearts novels, he leans into deniable missions, mercenary crews, and globe-spanning trouble spots. Gray War takes some of those same interests and shifts them into a more contemporary conspiracy-thriller mode, with private contractors caught between corruption, foreign influence, and organized crime. Readers often come for the hard military action, but they tend to stay because the books also pay attention to politics, pressure, and the way loyalties get tested when the job stops making clean sense.
He also writes well outside straight military thriller territory. A Silver Cross and a Winchester and the Jed Horn stories mix monster hunting, faith, and backroads American horror. Ice and Monsters throws Recon Marines into a brutal fantasy world and lets squad tactics crash into sorcery, ancient evils, and winter monsters. Even when the setting changes, the through line stays pretty clear: small groups under stress, people trying to protect each other, and characters who have to decide what they will still stand for when the world gets strange.
Nealen has written nonfiction too, including Operation Red Wings: The Rescue Story Behind Lone Survivor, and he has worked as a freelance writer and contributor for SOFREP. He has also described himself as a longtime reader of history, philosophy, folklore, science fiction, and fantasy, which helps explain why his bibliography can move from Iraq or Mexico to haunted hills and distant star systems without feeling forced.
These days he keeps adding to a body of work that ranges across military thrillers, horror, fantasy, and science fiction. He also continues to talk books, war, and geopolitics through his author site and livestreams.
That mix of field experience, broad reading, and obvious enthusiasm is what ties the whole shelf together.
