by Laurie Graham

1997

Lizzie Partridge thought television would bring glamour, not lonely dinners and humiliating midlife dating. As a divorced TV cook juggling work, family, and bad decisions, she tries to hold herself together with humor and food.

Anyone for Seconds?

by Laurie Graham

2018

Ex TV chef Lizzie Partridge has seen her career collapse in spectacular fashion after a chocolate mousse incident. A flight to Aberystwyth, a brush with the past, and a possible comeback force her to rethink what comes next.

Series background & context

The Perfect Meringues books revolve around Lizzie Partridge, a television cook whose life looks much shinier from the outside than it feels from the inside. In Perfect Meringues, she is a forty-something divorced presenter on daytime TV, trying to hold together work, motherhood, self-respect, and some kind of romantic future. She can manage a cookery segment. Real life is more hit and miss.

What makes the series work is that Laurie Graham never treats Lizzie as a joke, even when Lizzie is being ridiculous. She is lonely, impulsive, vain, funny, bruised, and often badly equipped for the reality she is living in. The television world gives the books some sparkle, but this is not really a behind-the-scenes media satire. It is more interested in the private cost of always looking capable.

Food is part of the pleasure, of course. So is the workplace comedy. But underneath that, the books are about the very ordinary humiliations of midlife. Marriage has failed. Men are disappointing. Children need things you are not always ready to give. Careers wobble. Friends tell the truth when you least want to hear it. Graham is very good on the gap between the self a person performs and the self they drag home at the end of the day.

Lizzie's relationships are what give the series its shape. Her daughter matters. Her friends matter, especially the ones who see through her bluffing and know when to be kind and when to be merciless. Graham lets Lizzie be selfish and needy without ever losing sight of her vulnerability, which is why the comedy lands. You laugh, and then you wince, because you can see exactly how she got herself into the mess.

Then comes Anyone for Seconds?, which picks up with Lizzie later on and no more sorted than before. A spectacular career crash involving chocolate mousse has left her trying to work out whether there is any way back, professionally or personally. The sequel sends her toward Aberystwyth, old connections, family complications, and the uneasy possibility of reinvention.

That is where the heart of the series really sits.

Across both books, Graham keeps returning to a simple question: what do you do when the life you were aiming for turns out not to fit? Lizzie is not young, not finished, and not especially wise, which makes her a great guide to that territory. The books are funny, biting, and unexpectedly tender about aging, appetite, status, and second chances. If you like character-led comedy that knows midlife can be both absurd and sore, this is a very satisfying little series.
