Uninvited

by Emily Shiner

2025

When an old friend shows up on her doorstep with a suitcase and a sad story, a woman reluctantly lets her stay for a few nights. The guest quickly inserts herself into every corner of the household, and sending her away may be far more dangerous than letting her stay.

Series background & context

Perfect Couples is Emily Shiner's psychological thriller series about relationships built around secrets, betrayal and competing plans. The title points to the gap between how a couple looks and what happens when no one else is watching. Engagements, holidays and weddings promise a fresh beginning, but the people entering them bring past grievances and concealed motives along. The suspense comes from discovering what each person wants and how far they will go to get it.

Uninvited begins with Aimee and her fiancé Dale on holiday at a resort. Their relationship has already been damaged by his affair, so the trip carries the hope of repairing something fragile. Then Hannah, the woman he cheated with, arrives with her own boyfriend. Aimee has to confront the affair again in a place where she expected to move beyond it. The apparent coincidence raises a more unsettling question about why Hannah is really there.

Hannah's interest reaches further back than Dale's infidelity. She knows Aimee from their school years, even though Aimee doesn't recognise her, and has a grievance of her own. That makes the holiday a meeting between two different understandings of the past. For Aimee, Dale was meant to offer a new start after years of keeping secrets. For Hannah, getting close to him offers a way to reach someone she believes should pay for an earlier loss.

A beautiful setting offers no guarantee of safety.

The resort brings four people together while allowing old injuries to intrude on their present relationships. The contrast between leisure and hostility gives the opening book its shape: people can share a holiday without sharing an honest account of why they came. Jealousy is only part of the problem. Revenge and the fear of exposure keep changing what a conversation or gesture might mean, so readers have to look beyond the obvious romantic rivalry.

Unmarried moves into a marriage involving Dr Mitch Ellis. His new wife discovers signs that the woman before her may not have died as she was told. Jewellery left in the bedroom and troubling details on a death certificate give her reasons to question him. Mitch expects a compliant wife and has staff who can watch her around his home. She has secrets to protect too, and doesn't intend to accept the role he has chosen for her.

Begin with Uninvited, then continue to Unmarried, which can also be read on its own. The books connect through their concern with control and the uneasy bargains hidden inside romantic commitments. Expect domestic suspense, morally complicated characters and relationships in which knowing someone's secret can be both a weapon and a danger.
