The Percy Place series moves back to late 1890s Dublin and opens with a house in trouble. In Impossible Dream, three young girls leave an orphanage and go into domestic service at the home of Captain Charles Whitmore. What they walk into is not a stable, polished household but a place shaped by fear, money worries, and the damage done by one man inside his own walls.

The heart of the series is Georgina Whitmore, later Georgina Corrigan, a woman who has spent years trapped in a violent marriage. When help arrives from the BOBs, an organisation that supports women fleeing abuse or genteel poverty, Percy Place begins to change. Instead of serving only one brittle family, the house starts becoming a refuge, a training ground, and a way station for women who need a path into paid work.

That gives the series its main shape. Some women are prepared for positions in Dublin. Others are sent across the Atlantic in hope of starting over, including opportunities linked to the Harvey Company in America. Meanwhile the house itself fills with servants, runaways, frightened newcomers, unexpected relatives, and helpers who all bring their own needs, loyalties, and secrets.

Percy Place is a safe house, a school, and a battleground all at once.

What keeps the books moving is not only the question of who arrives next, but whether this whole fragile experiment can hold together. There is never enough money. Respectability can be weaponised. Men still control most of the law, property, and public story. Even when Georgina and the women around her do everything right, they still have to deal with scandal, interference, paperwork, and the plain difficulty of feeding and housing people who have nowhere else to go.

The tone is that of a big-cast historical saga with a strong practical streak. Jackson is interested in escape, but she is just as interested in what comes after escape. How do women earn? Where do they live? Who teaches them the skills no one bothered to teach before? What sort of family can be built from strangers who arrive at the door carrying fear and very little else?

If you like historical fiction about women making new systems for themselves inside an old, unfair world, this series has a lot to offer. Dare To Dream and Cherish The Dream widen the emotional and social reach of the first book, but the main promise stays the same, people who have been boxed in are trying, day by day, to claim room to live differently.
