Pecan Creek is a smaller Tina Leonard world, but it has a strong personality. The setting is a Texas town that likes to think of itself as respectable, orderly, and morally tidy. Naturally, that means it is hiding plenty.

The best-known book here, Hotter than Texas, makes the tone clear right away. A family arrives in town hoping for a fresh start, only to discover that the locals are judgmental, the politics are personal, and the handsome landlord is easier to notice than he should be. Leonard uses that setup to have fun with appearances. Pecan Creek may present itself as The Most Honest Town in Texas, but the people living there are messier than the slogan suggests.

That is the joke, and also the point.

This is a series, or near-series, built more around place than around a giant recurring family tree. The town itself is the hook. Its rules, gossip, secrets, and self-importance create the tension that pushes the romance forward. Underneath the humor, though, Leonard is still interested in fresh starts, women protecting the people they love, and men deciding whether they are brave enough to stand beside all that chaos.

Readers who like small-town romance with a little more bite, a little more eccentric local color, and a heroine who does not arrive ready to be impressed will probably enjoy Pecan Creek. It is a good reminder that Leonard can do more than babies and ranch dynasties. She can also write a town full of contradictions and have a lot of fun letting its image crack open.
